Hello friends and scattered family in Messiah! I pray your week is going well! Let's deep dive. Please view the attached video above which explains the quick history that I only touch on lightly. I take a more in depth apologetics (defense of Scripture approach)
SO--- Why did Christian women of the past wear head covering's/veils more prevalently than today ? (1 Cor 11:1-16) -secularization and assimilation into a culture that is NOT ours.- TERTULLIAN OF CARTHAGE “So, too, did the Corinthians themselves understand. In fact, at this day the Corinthians do veil their virgins. What the apostles taught, their disciples approve." CLEMENT OF ALEXANDRIA “Woman and man are to go to church decently attired…for this is the wish of the Word, since it is becoming for her to pray veiled." HIPPOLYTUS OF ROME In The Apostolic Tradition, a work ascribed to Hippolytus, he says: “And let all women have their heads covered with an opaque cloth…" JOHN CHRYSOSTOM “…the business of whether to cover one’s head was legislated by nature. When I say “nature,” I mean “God.” For He is the One who created nature. Take note, therefore, what great harm comes from overturning these boundaries! And don’t tell me that this is a small sin.” “The angels are present here . . . Open the eyes of faith and look upon this sight. For if the very air is filled with angels, how much more so the Church! . . . Hear the Apostle teaching this, when he bids the women to cover their heads with a veil because of the presence of the angels." AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO“It is not becoming, even in married women, to uncover their hair, since the apostle commands women to keep their heads covered.” Paul's instructions are addressed to 'all who in every place call on the Lord Yeshua' and is based on unchangeable points. Paul's writing to the church at Corinth is telling women followers of Messiah to "let her be covered" - vs 6 this is a deliberate action 'let her BE covered"; especially in the gathering together of the saints and men should be uncovered. Head covering was NOT simply a cultural custom for the Corinthians. :headship order: 1) Abba God➡️Yeshua(Jesus) ➡️ man➡️woman this order is timeless and not cultural. 2) God's glory: vs 7 man is God's glory and thus should not be covered.... woman is man's glory and man's glory should be covered & vs 15 woman's long hair is her glory and her glory should be covered. Thus ALL glory belongs to God. 3) vs 10 because of the angels (angels also are timeless and not relative to Corinthian culture but to the body of Messiah as a whole they are in observation) This is a symbolic reminder of Yah's ordained order. Which serves to conceal man's glory which is-> woman- >and woman's glory which is->her hair.
But now if we look at Strong's Concordance: VS 6 For if the woman be not covered let her also be shorn (shaven): but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven let her be *covered.* G2619( Katakalupto) from G2569 and G2572 to cover wholly that is veil-cover hide. Continuing down to vs. 13 "Judge in yourselves: is it comely (appropriate) that a woman pray unto God *uncovered? G177 -> akatalkaluptos a negative particle of G2596, G2572 = uncovered, unveiled. So Paul says, vs 6, "if the woman BE NOT covered let her BE shorn/shaven" per the definitions from Strong's. >If she is not "veiled" G2619 let her be shorn/shaven.< IF the "covering" in question is the hair many attempt to rationalize...then it cannot be something that is an action to be done "let her BE covered" and an action that men should NOT DO. vs 7 A man indeed ought NOT TO COVER his head. (G2619 to cover wholly that is veil-cover hide) is used again. Essentially when people argue the hair is the only covering. The argument boils down to "man indeed ought NOT to cover his head" which equals {men should be bald.} vs 13 "is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered (bald)? Go back now to VS 6 For if the woman be not covered let her also be shorn (shaven): but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven let her BE *covered.* G2619( Katakalupto) from G2569 and G2572 to cover wholly that is veil-cover hide. So again this argument falls flat --if the woman is bald (uncovered) let her be shaven/shorn---?! There is no logic there. Obviously you cannot be shorn if you already have no hair.
To God’s community in Corinth—having been made holy in Messiah Yeshua, called as kedoshim(saints) —with ALL WHO EVERYWHERE call on the name of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, both theirs and ours: Grace to you and shalom from God our Father, and the Lord Yeshua the Messiah! 1 Cor 11:1-2 TLV Amen! Let His will be done on Earth as it is in heaven! *{excerpt from: Pursuing the upward call of God in Messiah Yeshua- Phil 3:14 - Pursuing the upward call of God in Messiah Yeshua- Phil 3:14} The falling away from wearing a headcovering went full swing during the rise of feminism in the 1960's..... it shrank slowly from: a full scarf, to a kerchief, to "sunday church hats," until women threw off the covering altogether. This in turn had women going full steam ahead into destroying the argument "hair is the covering" on their own by cutting off their own hair into very short masculine styles. Today now, look around and American culture, cannot even define what a woman is. Confusion runs rampant among both men and women. Men by and large have failed to lead. Women, since the dawn of creation, have continued trying to usurp and overthrow men of their rightful position. ~>for God is not a God of confusion, but shalom. As in all the communities of the kedoshim, 1 Cor 14:33 TLV <~ However, even today, most men maintain the custom of Paul by removing their hat, shawl etc for prayer, as it should be. vs 7 A man indeed ought NOT TO COVER his head. Additional sources http://www.bible-researcher.com/headcoverings.html Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness? What harmony does Messiah have with Belial? Or what part does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement does God’s Temple have with idols? For we are the temple of the living God—just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Therefore, come out from among them, and be separate, says Adonai. Touch no unclean thing. Then I will take you in. I will be a father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says Adonai-Tzva’ot.” 2 Cor. 6:14-18 TLV Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the boasting of life—is not from the Father but from the world. The world is passing away along with its desire, but the one who does the will of God abides forever. 1 John 2:15-17 TLV Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. I do enjoy using a Strong's Concordance app to dig deeper into scripture and study. So let's take a look at this section of scripture which many find confusing. In English the word "cover" is used frequently in this passage of scripture which is what has led to much of the confusion....."
