Hello friends and scattered family in Messiah!
Our 5th grade student is now moving into all kinds of fraction work: reducing fractions, converting from decimal to fraction and vice versa, mixed numbers and improper fractions, as well as, order of operations. That white board in the kitchen is so helpful for teachable moments like this. It looks disorderly but it made sense while in progress. She got all of her problems correct! We are using PEMDAS as a memorization aid for her to remember that process: PEMDAS is an acronym used to mention the order of operations to be followed while solving expressions having multiple operations. PEMDAS stands for P- Parentheses, E- Exponents, M- Multiplication, D- Division, A- Addition, and S- Subtraction. In addition to Masterbooks Math Level 5 as our base we use IXL Math | Learn math online and the corresponding IXL book as well for additional skills practice. Masterbooks as our foundation with these supplements for Math has worked well for our older children. With our 2nd grader we still utilize IXL Math | Learn math online But instead of the IXL math workbook we use Masterbooks Practice makes Perfect for extra worksheets. Until next time: May Adonai bless and keep you as you: press on pursuing the goal for the reward of the upward calling of God in Messiah Yeshua. Learning how to tell time! Our youngest has been waiting and waiting to use these..... I kept the lesson short, about 45 minutes enough for him to find it fun and learn a few basics.
He said setting the time on the plastic clock after rolling the dice to get the time was his favorite part. 2/8/22 We closed out the evening playing with the clock and dice again and using the matching cards...match the clock time to the right printed time. He really enjoyed it enough that he wasn't ready to put it up. In just 2 days he has learned SO MUCH. This was an excellent and fun resource to introduce time to him and he had fun while learning! Until next time, Blessings and Shalom as you continue to "pursue the upward calling of God in Messiah Yeshua"-Phil 4:13 *side note DISCLAIMER: I do not receive compensation from ANY of the resources I share or use. Let's close out this week with a little academic update!
These examples are from Math Level 4: Masterbooks. About a month ago our 9 year old starting learning long division and it just wasn't clicking for her as quickly as she would have liked. She grew frustrated and cried a few times, actually. But not due to parental pressure.....due to her own expectations. I was able to hug her and help her process by letting her know, "Hey, first breathe..... second you need to know not everything is going to come easy for you...what challenges you may not challenge your brothers and sisters and vice versa. That is part of life and that is ok. But you know what? God created you with the ability to do hard things. You can do this and we will practice together and make it make sense for YOU." ( I really treasure opportunities like this to educate the whole child. We get the privilege by Adonai to train them in the Word daily. By homeschooling them we also have the unique opportunity to see these emotional struggles as they happen. PAUSE, and help the child cope and address them before moving on.-- this often includes letting them break for recess or, maybe a 15 minute walk, exercise, or another calming outlet to exit the situation, regroup, and come back with a clear mind) My husband and his techy self cast his phone to the TV and worked through several problems with her using it like a projector basically. Then guess what we can do? Pause the textbook work! It's fabulous! Freedom I was never accustomed to growing up myself. But we just paused her book work and pulled practice worksheets off the internet and handwrote problems for her to work which you see above on the notebook paper and we did that for 3 weeks. A series of repetitive steps worked for her: 1.) How many times does the divisor fit into the dividend? 2) multiply the quotient and divisor 3) subtract 4) bring down the next dividend and repeat until you get a 0 (until we moved onto remainders) This wk after that near month long break from "the book" to practice 4-10 problems a day. Now she's confident and ready to move onto remainders! That's my girl! It's not a race. At the end of the day her success and understanding is what makes it all worthwhile. Homeschooling has given us the ability to help teach our children coping mechanisms for the tough times. You press forward, you got this, and it's ok if it's hard. Our kids do not get left behind as a class pushes ahead which is sadly what happened to me and it left me hating math all the way through college, actually I don't like it now in my 30's. We can pace, adjust, and work with them and what works for them! Now she's ready to soar into the next new thing and she had a smile on her face after working those few division problems with remainders! I hope this encourages someone. There is a celebration with every new success even the ones that came with the growth of frustration, a few tears, and a pause in the schedule....because the schedule is not what matters..... the child is. Those victories are the ones hard fought for that build her up to face bigger challenges. The next challenge that comes along she will be better prepared mentally and emotionally to press into it. Amen.
